Hot Rod

First off I'd like to say I'm really a huge fan of most types of comedies(dark, intellectual, stupid, slapstick, new, old, whatever). This is possibly one of the worst movies I've ever been so unfortunate to sit through. Have you ever watched a movie that was so bad you just watched the next couple minutes because something had to happen that would make this movie slightly better? That's this movie...but that moment never comes. The acting is mediocre, the jokes seem like they're geared more towards a grade school kid than an adult that would be able to comprehend a plot or any type of movie quality.

I've seen reviews of this movie trying to talk about a hidden meaning saying that people just don't get it.
No. I get it. It's horrible. It's not a movie making fun of dumb movies, it's just plain bad.

Don't even waste your time renting it from a $1 movie rental kiosk, you'll want your money back and more.

Idaho Spud Candy Bars: 24CT Box

It's not very often that I find a new type of candy to try, especially one that's been around for a while. I first saw these at a tiny convenience store in Roslyn, Washington. I decided to try one and I was HOOKED. I really don't even know how to describe how they taste. The Idaho Spud Candy Bar consists of a chocolate shell around a (brown sugar?) flavored marshmallow. The outside has coconut flakes on it. The candy bar is shaped like a....potato.

OK, so the idea sounds a little dumb, but the candy bar is really quite good, especially if you are looking for something different from the normal snickers, kit kat, M&M, Reeses etc.

Candy bars don't cost too much(I know the economy is bad right now, but if you need to borrow 75 cents I'm sure someone can help you out), go ahead and give this one a try. I can't tell you whether you will like it or not, but I can tell you I do!

Where has Derek been?

No, I usually don't talk about myself in the 3rd person. ;)

Where do I start? I've been all over the place. I believe the last time I checked in I was applying for an internship position at the Federal Aviation Administration. I got the position(90 day internship) and I've been extended twice already. My current appointment lasts until mid April and I've got another more permanent position in the works right now. Hopefully I'll be sure by the end of this month. I also applied to become an Air Traffic Controller(August 08). I was selected to take the Air Traffic Selection and Training Exam (AT-SAT)(November 08). I took the test (December 16th 2008) and I passed with a 92/100. I should be getting an email from them soon asking for geographic preferences. I completed my Business AA degree at the local community college and I'm now attending Central Washington University as a Junior in their Business Administration Program. I'm working full time and taking two classes in the evening.

Other than that I've been trying to make as much progress on my mustang as I can during this terrible winter we've had up here in the Pacific Northwest. I don't know that I've really made much more progress, but I've definitely spent a bunch more money on parts. I hope to have this stupid car done by race season this summer. As far as video games go I've been playing Call of Duty: World at War for both PS3 and Xbox 360, as well as dead space, Madden 09, Guitar Hero(of course), Left for Dead, Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, Battlefield: Bad Company, etc etc..

My free time for internet use is definitely not what it used to be, but I've missed all of you (at least those of you I knew before) and I'm sure I'll enjoy getting to know more of you as time goes on. I'm going to make an effort to show myself more frequently around here!

Wow Jennie, you're a helicopter pilot?! I rode in one when I was, maybe, 2 years old, and I can still remember it. IT WAS AWESOME!

Haven't since then though...

Oh and Derek -- glad you're back. And glad to hear you're still a gamer! :) We still need to get that starcraft game going sometime!

Welcome back Derek! Congrats on all the accomplishments and good luck on your 'stang.

Call of Duty World at War

I've been playing xbox games for about 2 years now, I haven't really found a game that I got truly involved in. I played Halo 3 for a while and it held my attention pretty well, but I just couldn't get into the multiplayer portion of the game. To me, the multiplayer(online) side of a game is what really decides how long a game will stay popular. If the mutliplayer sucks, the novelty of the game wears off with the completion of the single player campaign. Call of Duty 5 is probably one of the best multiplayer games I've come in contact with for the Xbox 360. Wait times for online games are minimal, gameplay isn't too unrealistic and the controls are extremely easy to get used to even for new players. The variety of maps is decent, and after playing a few games you quickly find your favorites. It isn't as good as it could be(friendly fire would make more sense, and destructable environments similar to "Battlefield: Bad company" would put the icing on the cake. Levels aren't difficult to attain, so frustration doesn't set in like other online multiplayer games, and the perks and weaponry upgrades for earned levels are fantastic.

I haven't been into shooter like this since Counterstrike. I highly recommend it.

Finals

I know you've all missed me for the past week. I just hope you didn't take it too hard living without my sarcasm and not-so-funny one liners. I've been studying hard for finals and working a bit too much. What have you all been up to?

Why is clint eastwood so amazing?

Pale Rider, Unforgiven, Outlaw Josie Wales....

so many amazing westerns.

how does this happen?

How does ANY actor appear in all types of amazing movie roles? Great talent, great opportunities, great choices, great experience. Eastwood has Sergio Leone to thank for casting him in his classic "Dollars Trilogy" of westerns in the 60s - Fistfull of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and of course Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, the films that made him an international star.

He's emerged recently as one of the great modern directors with classics like Unforgiven, Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, and Letters From Iwo Jima.
Alison G. 05/27/08
I like Clint Eastwood more for his role in jazz than his acting, although I like most of his movies. He's had his own jazz group for about 40 years, at least. He used to appear fairly regularly in Monterey. He's a cool guy. Renaissance man.

Why does organic milk last longer than non-organic milk?

If you look at milk at the grocery store the sell-by date on organic milk is always a month later than regular milk. why?

Derek I. 05/27/08
yeah, that's what I thought.....it isn't the case though...
Gary M. 05/27/08
I believe it's because organic milk is usually very close to the store. Most places that carry organic foods make deals with local suppliers of organic goods. So it will be much fresher than the non-organic pasteurized milk. Non-organic is generally just barely pasteurized, that is heated a bit, then cooled. Organic dairies usually use UHT or Ultra High Temperature treatments which kills any potential nasties, and keeps fat globules and stuff from separating. Organic dairies use UHT primarily for safety and longevity. As is the general rule in a capitalist country, the non-organic places just want you to buy more, more often.

Why don't they sell single shoelaces?

If one shoelace breaks, I don't need two...

Christy M. 05/25/08
You buy shoelaces? I just go in the corner of the store and ninja it from the box... ;D Just kidding, but that'd make more sense than buying 2....
Jennie J. 05/26/08
They really should sell them separately as the chances of you needing both new ones at the same time are slim. So what happens is you replace one and end up loosing the second one.

Salton/Maxim Westclox 114661 Meteor Black Alarm Clock

wow, It's actually pretty funny that someone else uses this alarm clock. I've had it since I was in middle school, and I still use it today. I absolutely hate the noise this stupid thing makes.

I hate it so much that when I hear an alarm sound on TV or on the radio that is similar I tend to cringe.

Why do I still use it then you ask? FOR THAT VERY REASON!

I have tried to use my cell phone alarm before, but the noise just isn't harsh enough(or loud enough) to make me wake up and stay awake.

alarm clocks are supposed to be annoying, and this one sucks. well. It works well, but the noise sucks.

you know what I mean :)

Optima 75/25 Red Top

I've owned 4 cars since I started driving, and every single one of my cars has had an optima battery in it. The overall quality of optima batteries is well-known throughout the automotive community.

I've drained my redtop battery down to nothing before(I've owned many high quality sound systems, and when I was younger I tended to use them while the car was not running. This results in a dead battery if you do it for an extended period of time. I wouldn't recommend it) :)

The battery charged right back up and has had zero problems since then. It was my first car and I drive it daily. Same battery.

Car audio competition cars use optima batteries 99% of the time, and auto enthusiasts with high performance cars use them as well.

Bunn NHBX-B 10-Cup Coffee Maker

While growing up my family has always used a bunn coffee maker. I really didn't think much of it until I decided to buy one for myself recently. I bought a cheap coffee maker for myself and went to make a cup of coffee. I made it pretty much the same way I always do, but it just didn't taste the same when I was done.

I couldn't figure it out for the longest time, but I didn't think much of it until I used my parent's coffee maker again, and it was just a darn good cup of coffee. Same beans that I use, just a different coffee maker.

The best thing about the bunn is definitely the water reservoir. All BUNN coffee makers have auto-heating water reservoirs so it makes your coffee SO MUCH FASTER.

From my experience: if you've owned a BUNN and you have to have your coffee every morning, you'll never buy anything else.

Candyland (EA)

I don't know how many times I played this when I was a kid. I played it at daycare time and time again with the other kids. It was pretty fun to play, but I don't know if I could play it now. It seems like it would be difficult to keep my attention on the game.

I can usually find some amount of amusement in most anything, but this game would probably be a bit too simple. It's a great game for any child in grade school to play, but anyone above grade school age might get a bit bored.

Scrabble (EA)

ahhhh scrabble, the game that started.... well... many nights of extreme frustration for me when I was younger. Don't get me wrong, I love the game, but sometimes the game can be so challenging that irritation sets in.

Why does it always seem that the person you are playing against has the dictionary memorized and you can't even think of a three letter word to use?

Either way the game is actually a blast. It exercises the mind, it's fun, and you can learn from the person you are playing against.

Scrabble isn't my favorite board game, but it's definitely up there on the list.

If you haven't played it I would definitely recommend it. If you have played it you already know.
