This season, American Idol has given us the auditions they promised us. While the show has never dropped from being number one in the ratings, it wasn't quite as far ahead in recent years. In the off season, Fox announced that this year would be different. We'd have less weeks of auditions, an extended Hollywood round, and semi-finals like in years past, meaning with a wild card round. We'll be voting finalists in instead of voting semi-finalists out. So far, a third of the way into the process, it's as billed.
Normally by the time we would move to the Hollywood rounds, our ears would be fried from listening to too many bad auditions and for far too long. But this season, the process hasn't begun to gnaw away at me yet, and we're already done with it. Additionally, we haven't had as many of the bad auditions. Instead of seeing just a few of the good auditions and seeing a bunch of bad ones that have us pounding our heads against the wall, we saw some great talent come through, meaning right now I'm counting down the days until Hollywood starts.
However, I do have a small bone to pick with the judges. While I find the addition of Kara DioGuardi wonderful and necessary, it doesn't seem to have brought new blood in as far as what is expected. We're all sick of hearing Whitney Houston and Stevie Wonder, so why are these the only auditioners they allow through? They could liven up the field so much if they would only allow some alternative music.
