This is the type of psychological thriller I can really get into. Anthony Hopkins finds his wife cheating, then surprises her when she comes home, tells her he loves her, and murders her in cold blood. The gardeners hear gunshots, and when the police arrive on the scene, Hopkins is found holding a gun. It seems pretty open and shut. The lead detective, played by Ryan Gosling, happens to be the man that was having the affair with Hopkins wife, and when he arrives on the scene, he sees his lover lying on the floor, dead, and attacks Hopkins. And this is where the psychological warfare begins, as Hopkins practically dares him to prove he did it.

We know Hopkins did it, and Gosling does too, but Hopkins is so boldfaced about denying it, that it makes it hard to prove it. Hopkins is an aeronautical engineer who likes to construct marble mazes, and it becomes clear throughout how much he enjoys this game, similar to the way he portrayed Hannibal Lecter. Gosling doesn't want to tell anyone about the affair, and Hopkins continually plays with that fact to make it harder and harder on him. It's almost as if he didn't murder his wife because of being upset with her, but murdered her just so that she could become the marble in his maze to bring Gosling down.
