This movie got good reviews as a sleeper hit that will tug at your heart strings, yada, yada, yada. There were some sweet moments, but other than that I did not fall in love with this movie. I did try. It wasn't the acting that put me off. It was more the fact that I didn't think the story was that compelling. Movies like this have been done to death and this version of the same old yarn didn't have anything new to add. Basic synopsis: Widower adopts troubled boy, boy has trouble adjusting (because he's off beat and super smart), when they finally make a connection courts threaten to take him away, big climax at the end, widower saves boy, courts say "keep him", they live happily ever after, the end. Okay, there is of course more to it than that, but that's it in a nutshell. I'm pretty sure you all thought it would be like this anyway, so I doubt I ruined it for you. If so, sorry!! I’m trying to save you the cash! I would wait until this puppy’s on cable! :)

An adorable film. Anyone who says different has no good sense for films! It may be a generally cliché plot line... but it is still so adorable! I saw this film in theatres with my sister and all I could do was say "Oh my god!"... I fell in love with it. It is one of those newer films that I just ADORE!!!!! I cannot say it enough.
I've always been a John Cusack fan... any film with John Cusack in it... I HAVE to watch. So obviously when I saw that Cusack was one of the main characters in the film... I was determained to go see it! (:
Again, I was SO glad I did! (: John Cusack is STUNNING in this film with his co-star the "martain child". The characters are adorable, and so is the plot. It is definitely a tear-jerking, pull at the strings of your heart, kind of film. Maybe that's my kind of film... but it is good for the whole family!
In fact, thinking about it... I've just popped it in to watch again. :P

I just felt so incredibly much for the little boy in Martian Child. How lonely and out of place do you have to feel in your life to either believe or pretend that you are from another planet. Having been abandoned, and preferring to spend his time in a cardboard box, no one has to tell you that he's suffered some emotional abuse.
Who better to adopt this boy than a newly widowed science-fiction writer, played by John Cusack. If there's anyone that understands being different, it's any character played by Cusack, and certainly a science-fiction writer. He and his wife had planned on starting a family at the time she died, and he finally realizes he doesn't have to give that up. He has love to give.
Everyone tells Cusack he shouldn't adopt this boy, as he's so troubled, but they immediately connect, and he just can't turn away from him. It becomes a really powerful move with a really powerful message about being different.
