"They're heeeee-eeeere!"
How dare they take something so benign like a child watching TV and turn it into a scary event! However, the coupling of that unique event, along with a great catchline of "They're heeeee-eeeere" uttered by a little girl was a great draw in this movie. It became a catchphrase that was on everyone's tongue, and they followed up that success by producing a sequel where the little girl was able to exclaim "they're baaaa-aaaack."
The little girl begins communicating with the ghosts, as she's apparently being used a vehicle. And after a series of strange events occur inside her family's home, she is abducted through the TV, something that is only discovered after her brother hears her speaking to him through the set.
It's been rumored that there really is something afoot with this movie and its sequels. Both of the daughters in the film died very prematurely. I don't know about a curse, but knowing that, it makes watching this movie all that much more interesting.
