Macaulay Culkin was still cute in this movie, and it was really the first thing we saw him in to speak of. He showed he had incredible comedic timing for his age, and the inquisition over breakfast John Candy is one of my favorite bits of all time.
Candy is Uncle Buck, sent to watch his nieces and nephew when his brother and sister-in-law have to travel out of town unexpectedly. He doesn't do a good job of running his own life, and now has to manage that of a teenager and two little kids. Despite this, he seems to put everything he has into taking care of these kids. The teenaged daughter tries to take advantage of the situation, but it's like the old saying, "You can't kid a kidder." Buck has her all figured out.
Similar to watching Michael Keaton in Mr. Mom, Buck has funny ways of getting it done, but it works, from his giant-sized pancakes to drying clothes in the microwave. In the end, he does well, and proves he's not such a louse after all. He really was trying to do his best.
