Macaulay Culkin was still cute in this movie, and it was really the first thing we saw him in to speak of. He showed he had incredible comedic timing for his age, and the inquisition over breakfast John Candy is one of my favorite bits of all time.

Candy is Uncle Buck, sent to watch his nieces and nephew when his brother and sister-in-law have to travel out of town unexpectedly. He doesn't do a good job of running his own life, and now has to manage that of a teenager and two little kids. Despite this, he seems to put everything he has into taking care of these kids. The teenaged daughter tries to take advantage of the situation, but it's like the old saying, "You can't kid a kidder." Buck has her all figured out.

Similar to watching Michael Keaton in Mr. Mom, Buck has funny ways of getting it done, but it works, from his giant-sized pancakes to drying clothes in the microwave. In the end, he does well, and proves he's not such a louse after all. He really was trying to do his best.

Classic! What a classic! John Candy is hilarious. Obviously no one has an uncle that is this much fun but anyone can understand why everyone feels the way they do about him. Macauly Culkin is just the cutest little boy too. And how unforgettable is a giant pancake?? Wouldn't you just love to have a GIANT pancake waiting for you whenever you woke up? I know I would. But it is a great movie to watch in the winter...and I personally just love it! It is a wonderful John Hughes film that everyone can watch and enjoy and I wish there were more movies made like it nowadays.

Masquerading as a stupid comedy is a heartwarming family film that if you squint really hard, you can imagine being a french film first -- I swear to god, it's that good. John Candy stars in this family comedy about a loser who doesn't think he's a loser who helps the people around him see that they are better people than they ever imagined. He handles kids (McCauley Culkin), teenagers, sex starved neighbors and a girlfriend (Amy Harris) who wasn't so sure about him at the opening of the movie. Set in John Hughes' Chicago, this 1989 film delivers the goods. The bowling ball in the closet scene is still in my mind years after viewing, as one that shouldn't have made me laugh, but because of Candy's comedic performance, did. If you want an easy laugh and a feel good film that isn't taxing on the brain, check this out. And if you have kids, introduce them to Uncle Buck.

I just purchased Uncle Buck on DVD; it is one of the greatest John Candy movies ever made. Uncle Buck is a notoriously irresponsible relative that has a heart of gold and races to aid his brother’s family in their time of need. Agreeing to care for his nieces and nephew, Uncle Buck signs up for more challenges than he expected with the lovable little tykes he recalled from years ago when he last visited his brother.

The reason I like this move so much is because it reminds me of a time when a film did not require the compartmental aspects of the love interest, the best friend, the happy ending and so forth. Uncle Buck offers a brief glimpse into the life of a real American family; they are troubled, but there are moments of laughter and relief.
